Open your eyes: Leonardo da Vinci
A new vision can be born, continued, perfected: Paul Cézanne
One cannot go wrong with the truths of nature: Charles Biederman

Charles Biederman
(1906 -2004 ) launched his career with two important exhibitions in New York City in March, 1936. He moved to Paris the following October but returned to the United States nine months later, disillusioned with European modernism and convinced that only in America could a truly new art be developed. In 1942 he settled in Red Wing, Minnesota where, living in isolation with his wife Mary and daughter Anna, he developed his theories and perfected his art. 1948 saw the publication of his epic Art as the Evolution of Visual Knowledge, a milestone of twentieth century art theory and the most important of dozens of books and articles he published over the years. Biederman's unique artistic contribution grew out of a half-century-long study of nature's structural processes, building on the pioneering achievements of the artists he admired most: Leonardo, Courbet, Monet and Cézanne. His rich, lyrical art is among the most visually exciting and intellectually satisfying of our time. Biederman still lives in Red Wing, enjoying the company of his daughter and a small group of friends who developed the present website in celebration of the life and work of this seminal, uncompromising artist.
